Three Professions for Change. Coming up March and April 2026 in Kwale, Kenya.

The PROJECT.

Three Professions for Change brings together architects, doctors, and teachers to work side by side with local communities in Kwale, Southern Kenya.

The project focuses on education, health, and architecture, combining professional expertise with local knowledge to create sustainable, long-term impact.

Our approach is based on collaboration, mutual learning, and respect — empowering communities rather than imposing solutions.

The CHALLENGE.

Kwale County, located along Kenya’s southern coast, faces persistent challenges related to poverty, limited infrastructure, and unequal access to education and healthcare. Many families struggle to meet basic needs, and schools are often under-resourced, with overcrowded classrooms and a lack of adequate learning facilities.

Our GOALS.

We sustainably improve the learning environment at Mwamgunga School in Kwale by renovating and implementing building measures. This creates safe, functional spaces for teaching, experiments, and exams, supporting long-term educational opportunities for children.

We address educational inequality by strengthening early literacy and numeracy skills, providing professional development for teachers, and supporting children and youth in their personal growth. Our focus is on sustainable learning and local empowerment.

We improve access to basic healthcare through prevention programs, health education, and medical support. By strengthening health awareness within the community, we help create the conditions for children to grow up healthy — because learning starts with wellbeing.

What We Do.

Architecture
and Infrastructure

At Mwamgunga School in Kwale County, learning conditions are limited by inadequate infrastructure — particularly in science subjects, where appropriate spaces and basic equipment for practical exercises are missing. As these are essential parts of the national curriculum in Kenya, students are placed at a disadvantage when preparing for their final exams.

Our project addresses this by upgrading existing classrooms and providing essential learning infrastructure. Through targeted architectural interventions, we create safe, functional spaces that support hands-on education and strengthen daily learning conditions.

Beyond technical improvements, we follow an architectural approach rooted in local context: existing buildings are preserved where possible, regional construction methods are respected, and local materials and craftsmanship are integrated. In close collaboration with the community, we develop sustainable solutions that strengthen both educational opportunities and local identity.

Education and Teaching

Kwale County has one of the highest secondary school dropout rates in Kenya. Many children enter secondary education without sufficient foundational skills in reading and mathematics, which significantly limits their learning progress. Girls are particularly vulnerable to leaving school early due to social expectations, early pregnancies, and a lack of accessible role models.

Our education program aims to sustainably reduce educational inequality by strengthening basic literacy and numeracy skills from an early age, supporting teachers through professional training, and accompanying children and young people in their personal development. Through mentoring, targeted learning support, and community-based approaches, we help students build confidence, resilience, and long-term learning capacity — creating pathways toward continued education and self-determined futures.

Health and Medical Support

Kwale County is among Kenya’s structurally disadvantaged regions, with many communities living in rural areas that have limited access to healthcare services. Local health centers are often understaffed and lack essential medical equipment, medication, and specialized professionals, making it difficult to provide adequate care.

Our health initiative focuses on strengthening healthcare services through preventive programs, treatment of acute and chronic conditions, health education, and psychosocial support. At the same time, knowledge transfer plays a central role: local healthcare workers are supported through collaborative practice, training opportunities, and exchange initiatives. This approach helps improve quality of life in the short term while building local capacity to ensure sustainable medical care beyond the duration of the project.

Our BACKGROUND and PARTNER.

The project is implemented in close collaboration with local partner schools and communities in Kwale County, with support from Strathmore University. International and Kenyan volunteers from different professional backgrounds work hand in hand with local constructors, doctors and educators. Through this collaborative, cross-disciplinary approach, we create sustainable improvements in infrastructure and education — generating long-term impact rooted in local knowledge and shared expertise.

Our VALUES

We believe in collaboration on equal footing, working closely with local communities while valuing their knowledge and cultural context. Sustainability and long-term thinking guide every project we implement. At the heart of our work lies education — empowering individuals, strengthening communities, and creating lasting change.
